Who are the IOS Alliance?
Barhale is one of three delivery partners within the Anglian Water Integrated Operational Solutions (IOS) Alliance. IOS is a medium to high complexity, capital maintenance and enhancement, Civil and MEICA, design and build delivery unit working across Water and Water Recycling to support the successful implementation of the Anglian Water AMP 8 business plan.
Design Manager
The Role
The role of the Design Manager is to hold responsibility for CDM Principal Designer duties for your designated programme of works. Ensuring successful delivery through planning, managing and controlling the delivery of design projects in the pre-construction phase within IOS by Barhale as the nominated Tier 1 Partner. Leading the Design Team engineers for your particular programme of works to develop innovative, efficient, technical solutions.
Supporting engineers with project scoping, identifying design delivery routes (internal or external), together with survey requirements. Develop with the Design Team, design plans and briefs to meet project objectives that are compliant with client, statutory and industry standards, regulations, and specifications.
Manage and monitor pre-construction design budgets and programmes, together with the evaluation of engineering solutions and designs. This is particularly important for external design work.
Ensure that safety, buildability & maintainability, and environmental best practice is achieved through design. Coordinating the permanent and temporary works design, ensuring design approval before construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Delegated responsibility for the programmes CDM Principal Designer duties.
- Design Leadership: oversee the design process from initial scoping (concept) with the Engineer to completion.
- Leading a team of design engineers and CAD technicians.
- Design Planning: coordinate with the Planning Team to develop & maintain the design programme & resource availability within the Design Team.
- Feedback to the Project Engineer and Project Delivery Teams if there are concerns with the timelines.
- Manage surveying: after initial scoping with the Engineer, identify survey requirements, e.g. topographic, 3D scans, trial holes, ecology and GPRS and coordinate with the Engineer to ensure that all pre-construction information is obtained.
- Design execution: plan, execute and control engineering output including technical reports, process & mechanical calculations, drawings and specifications.
- Liaise with the Design Manager to ensure design work is checked & signed off before construction.
- Stakeholder management: coordinate with the Client, suppliers and regulatory bodies to ensure successful design delivery.
- Standards: Ensure all designs are delivered to the correct standards and specifications.
- Develop, maintain, and meet design budgets and programmes.
- Collaboration with internal and external technical, operational, maintenance, and strategic stakeholders, and design coordinators.
- Manage the delivery of designs that meet project objectives and comply with client, statutory and industry standards, regulations, and specifications.
- Management of inputs from the Barhale temporary works design office.
- Coordination of interfaces between permanent and temporary works design.
- Collaboration with the delivery team to ensure that designs are buildable and drive efficiency in construction.
- Managed enabling activities to secure the required consents.
Essential:
- Relevant experience in a similar role, ideally within the Rail or construction/engineering industry
- Experienced negotiator, with the ability to establish long-term relationships and an engaged, collaborative supply chain
- Demonstrable commercial awareness, with the ability to control and monitor budgets
- Finely tuned communication skills regarding engaging with external and internal parties, including a confident and professional telephone manner
- Ability to use the full Microsoft Suite
- Work as part of a team, but can work on your own initiative
Desireable:
- CIPS qualification or working towards CIPS
- Relevant degree or equivalent/or qualified by experience (QBE)
- A full UK driving licence
